About

The Rare Barrel, an all-sour beer company based in Berkeley, CA, has an immediate opening for an entry-level, full-time position as an Operations Assistant. We are searching for someone responsible and trustworthy who can match our passion for sour beer and commitment to quality. We work as a team and share in both the difficulties and the fun aspects of working at a brewery. Prior experience working in a brewery, winery or distillery is not required, but preferred. Work experience with areas related to forklift operation, driving, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and/or welding is great, but not required.
 
This position will report to the Director of Sales and Marketing. Secondarily, this position will report to the Cellar Manager.
 
Hours | 5 days per week (8+ hours per day), Monday - Friday and 1 Saturday per month. Some exceptions (ie, attending an event)
Compensations | Entry-Level, DOE

Requirements

This is a physical position. Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time and be comfortable working on their feet. Employees must also be able to lift 40 lb. boxes and 55 lb kegs regularly. This is a bona fide requirement of the job.
 
Safety must always be a priority. Due to the physical nature of the job and the inherent risks of working in a production facility doing this job safely must be your first priority.
 
Employee must be able to drive a forklift and become forklift certified within 2 weeks of starting this position. The Rare Barrel will provide the training for this.

Employee must be highly organized and detail oriented.
 
Proficiency in Google Drive, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Windows OS is required.
 
Employee must be a team player, honest, trustworthy, dedicated, hard-working, self-motivated, and possess a strong attention to detail. A personal commitment to cleanliness and efficiency is required.

Duties

Sales and Marketing Department

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate movement of packaged beer and keep the packed beer areas organized and accessible. Beer must be readily accessible to the Tasting Room, Production, Sales and Marketing and our Quality Department.
  • Picking and packing of orders for consumers, retailers, off-site events, distributors and exporters.
  • Load and unload deliveries and/or pickups at the brewery.
  • Work with production to schedule forklift and other material handling usage.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in monthly inventory counts. If there are larger discrepancies between book and physical inventory, take steps to discover where the inventory discrepancies are coming from.
  • Retail finished beer delivery.

Production Department

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Handling internal inventory transfers from Production to Sales / Marketing.
  • Load and unload deliveries and/or pickups at the brewery.
  • Assist in keg, barrel, bottle, etc. handling.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with some cellar operations in the brewery, including keg washing and packaging.

Company-wide:

  • Paperwork - Ensure that all relevant paperwork and data entry is complete, accurate and on time.
  • Communication - Liaison between Sales / Marketing and Production.
  • Maintenance - Keep all related equipment and areas in good working order.
  • Development and maintenance of all SOP, checklists, plans and best practice documents for the duties above.
  • Other tasks as needed.

We're Hiring | Part Time Tasting Room Server

About

The Rare Barrel, a sour beer-focused brewery with rotating guest beers and a full kitchen, based in Berkeley, CA, has an immediate opening for a part-time position as a Tasting Room Server. We are searching for someone responsible and trustworthy who can match our passion for craft beer and commitment to quality. Prior experience working in a brewery, winery or distillery is preferred.
 
This position reports directly to the General Manager and Assistant Tasting Room Manager.
 
Hours | Minimum of 2 Tasting Room shifts per weekend (part-time, 16 hours/week).
Compensation | $15.00/hour + tips
 

Requirements

We are looking for a team player, who is honest, trustworthy, dedicated, hard-working, self-motivated as well as possess a great attitude and attention to detail. Applicants should also take pride in communicating effectively with customers and fellow employees. A personal commitment to cleanliness and organization is required.
 
Must be available to work weekends (Saturdays and Sundays).
 
This is a physical position. Applicants will be required to occasionally lift kegs ups to 60 lbs safely (this is a bona fide occupational qualification), to stand for long periods of time, and be comfortable working on their feet. Applicants are required to pass the ABC LEAD certification (alcohol service) within 60 days of commencing employment, and ServSafe Food Server certification prior to the first day working in the Tasting Room & Kitchen. Applicants are required to renew these certifications (or their equivalent if changed over time) thereafter in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.

Shifts and Availability

Tasting Room Shift Hours

  • Saturdays 10:00AM-11:30PM
  • Sundays 10:00AM-9:00PM
*Additional shifts may become available on Thursdays and Fridays
*Availability for special events, which occur around 12-15 times per year, is also required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Service:

  • Greet guests in a welcoming manner
  • Verify age from a government-issued ID card before serving alcohol
  • Efficiently take orders and promptly serve guests (food, bottled/draft beer, merchandise)
  • Maintain knowledge of the TRB brand to address any guest questions
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of what sour beer is and how it is made
  • Be able to competently describe all products available for sale and upsell customers on items to go, membership and subscriptions programs, food, and events
  • Accurately calculate food and merchandise bills, collect payments, and handle cash
  • Prepare and serve food according to safe food handling practices
  • Keep up to date with all of the dishes on our ever-changing food menu
  • Act as an overall outstanding ambassador for our growing company

Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • Maintain all TR glassware to a “beer-clean” standard
  • Maintain a clean bar during and after service
  • Assist in cleaning the draft system on a regular basis
  • Perform daily and weekly preventative maintenance on the Crowler machine
  • Bus tables, clean dishes, and clean kitchen at closing
  • Maintain clean bathrooms
  • Rotate kegs and help keep the cold box organized
  • Participate in opening and closing cleaning responsibilities
  • Participate in all-staff “Deep Clean” days

Senior Cellar Technician

Duties

Cleaning, Organization and Paperwork

Lots of Cleaning. Sweeping, mopping, and organizing are a big part of this job (and any job in the brewing industry). This includes keeping the barrel cellar clean, organized and orderly. At The Rare Barrel, we are heavily focused on documentation of our processes and results. Keeping accurate and orderly paperwork is a top priority. This includes maintaining inventory, taking gravity, pH and temperature readings on tanks and barrels, etc. Additionally, working on critical documents such as our master production spreadsheet, beer planning sheets and the daily report will require accuracy and attention to detail from this position.
 

Packaging

Set up, operation and clean up of bottling, labeling, waxing and kegging. CIP, Sani, maintenance and SOP / checklist ownership of related equipment. 
 

Material Handling and Maintenance

Keeping our equipment operating properly ensures our beers are the highest quality. This includes proper maintenance of forklifts, pallet jacks, barrels and lab equipment, as well as proper storage of raw materials, brewing equipment and finished product.
 

Barrel Maintenance and Movement

Treatment of oak barrels including pressure rinses, ozone rinses, steaming, etc. This position is also responsible for forklifting and organization of barrels in the stacks and those staged for racking.

 

Cellar Work and Brewing

Moving beer from place to place, along with cleaning tanks, hoses, parts, etc. Proper and safe usage of chemicals, gases, equipment is essential. Filling and emptying oak barrels also requires elite attention to detail and proper paperwork. Handling wort production including box truck driving, following proper knockout procedures at host breweries, preparing and loading the ingredients and equipment needed, knockout procedures at The Rare Barrel, and as always, following safest and best practices in this process. Assisting in coordination of cellar scheduling.
 

Tasting and Blending

Participate as part of our blending and tasting team. This includes daily barrel tastings (free from off-flavors, outliers, etc.), QA/QC tastings run by our quality department, ingredient intensity checks and carbonation checks. Assist in barrel sampling, mock blend and force carbonation, and blend development.
 

Research and Development

Assist in activities to trial new ingredients, yeast, bacteria, and other innovations.
 

Innovation & Personal Growth

We blend and taste as a team. We also strive to improve everything we do as a team. This position should feel free to submit proposals on process, beer making and other improvements to help make The Rare Barrel a better place. Proposals will be considered and followed up on. You will have a voice in how things are done here. Within jobs, we can develop “specialty” additions to your title when you find an area you excel at and is a need for the brewery. These can range from wort production to maintenance to packaging and beyond.
